John L Walters
London-based writer John L Walters is the editor and co-owner of Eye, the international review of graphic design. In April 2008 he led a management buy-out of the title with Simon Esterson, Eye’s art director.
He studied maths with physics at King’s London and was a jazz composer, pop musician and record producer before moving into journalism, launching award-winning audio journal Unknown Public with Laurence Aston in the 1990s. Walters also writes about jazz, world and experimental music for many publications, including the Guardian. He became editor of Eye in 1999 and has been nominated six times for the BSME editorial Awards, winning in 2002.
Walters has given guest lectures at a variety of universities; he has also programmed several Eye Forums and symposiums in collaboration with design educators. He chaired the jury for the inaugural European Design Awards and the 24th International Biennial of Graphic Design, Brno and was a juror/exhibitor for the Fifth Visual Communications Biennial in Ljubljana.
He has co-curated several events and conferences, including ‘Critical Tensions’ (2011); Eye’s quarterly ‘Type Tuesday’ events; and semi-regular ‘archive nights’ in London, New York and Amsterdam.
