Rick Poynor is a writer, critic, lecturer and curator, specialising in design, photography and visual culture. He is Visiting Professor in Critical Writing in Art & Design at the Royal College of Art. Poynor was the founding editor of Eye magazine, which he edited from 1990 to 1997, and he has contributed the Critique column to Eye since 1999.
In 2003, he was a co-founder of Design Observer, where he writes a wide-ranging regular blog. His column for Print magazine in New York has been running since 2000, and his articles, essays and reviews have also appeared in Blueprint, Creative Review, Icon, Frieze, Étapes, Domus, The Guardian, Financial Times, and many other publications. His books include Obey the Giant: Life in the Image World (2001), Jan van Toorn: Critical Practice (2008) and No More Rules: Graphic Design and Postmodernism (2003), which was reissued this year. In 2004, he curated ‘Communicate: Independent British Graphic Design since the Sixties’, a major survey exhibition for the Barbican Art Gallery.
